Wings over Milton A Call for Artists

A Call for Artists

The city of Milton is making a call for artists to compete in the Wings over Milton Public Art Contest. The contest is designed to bring creativity and imagination to the city, bringing human sized murals to provide interaction with public art; any type of wings for people to interact, photograph and share with friends.

The potential artist(s) will craft a mural(s) in various places within the city, (with property owner’s consent) where people can take photos, selfies or videos as a tourist attraction. This competition would be constructed to establish and develop aesthetically pleasing artwork for the community. The artwork could highlight the county’s aviation history.

A new marketing tagline “Local Utilities at Work, Natural Gas of Milton” will be utilized during the project.

The contest will both grant the winner with $500 and cover the cost of the artwork not to exceed $1,000 on a reimbursement Submissions must be in 8.5 x 11, full color in jpeg format. Submission must detail the exact dimensions of the completed work, when installed. If selected, the artist will be commissioned to create and install the wings as shown on the submission. A materials list must be provided. All materials proposed must of a type that can withstand the harsh southern environment and weather. A project cost must also be provided.

The selected artist will be recognized at the instillation site and may sign or otherwise "tag" the piece as shown in the examples below. The artist signature or tag must be shown in the submission. The City of Milton will own all rights to the work produced and may reproduce the image in anyway the City so chooses. The artist may, with written permission of the City use the image in marketing/promotional printed or electronic media only. The City may choose to engage the artist, at the City's sole discretion, to reproduce the image on the City's behalf.

Entrants must be at least 18 years of age to enter. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian to sign the Liability and Publicity Release on their behalf as a condition of entry.

Artwork must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy, publicity or other intellectual property or other rights of any person or entity.

The city will own all rights to the work produced and may reproduce the image in any way the city so chooses.

Judging Criteria: Appropriateness of the entry to the contest theme (wings), creativity and originality; ability to effectively express meaning and uniqueness.


Two (2) submissions per artist.

The overall size of the work must not exceed a maximum size of 15 ft. wide by 15 ft. tall. However, artists are not required to design to this maximum size.

The artist's submission must not infringe upon any third party's proprietary rights and must not violate any intellectual property laws.

The artist must submit an artwork created by him- or herself.

The submission cannot be identical to or a copy, reproduction or only slightly altered version of someone else's existing work.

The artist's submission must be one single work of art. That single work of art may consist of multiple components, but must form a coherent, conceptual whole.

The artist's submission, and every single component of that submission, must be wholly owned by the artist as of the date of submission.

All submissions must conform to the standards of decency, norms and values of Milton, FL.

The tagline Your Local Utilities Money at Work, Natural Gas of Milton must be located somewhere within the work of art and be easily recognizable.

The City of Milton may engage the community in the selection process, but reserves the exclusive right to select the winning work of art.

The City of Milton reserves the right to not proceed with selection and/or instillation of the work of art at its sole discretion.


Entry may not contain, as determined by the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, any content that:

   ·Is sexually explicit or suggestive; violent or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional or age group; profane or pornographic; contains nudity;

   ·Promotes alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms/weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing); promotes   any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous; promotes any particular political agenda or message;

   ·Is obscene or offensive; endorses any form of hate or hate group;

   ·Appears to duplicate any other submitted Entries;

   ·Defames, misrepresents or contains disparaging remarks about other people or companies;

   ·Contains trademarks, logos, or trade dress (such as distinctive packaging or building exteriors/interiors) owned by others, without permission;

   ·Contains any personal identification, such as personal names or e-mail addresses;

   ·Contains copyrighted materials owned by others (including photographs, sculptures, paintings, and other   works of art or images published on or in websites, television, movies or other media), without permission; contains materials embodying the names, likenesses, voices, or other indicia identifying any person, including, without limitation, celebrities and/or other public or private figures, living or dead, without permission;

 ·Contains look-alikes of celebrities or other public or private figures, living or dead;

·Communicates messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or good will to which we wish to associate; and/or

·Violates any law.
